Timing is per plant, not per visit
Prune a spring bloomer in winter and you have cut off the flowers before they opened. Azaleas, gardenias and loropetalum all set buds well before they show. We work to the plant, which sometimes means leaving one alone this month.
Thinning, not just shearing
A sheared hedge grows a dense outer shell that shades its own interior until the middle is bare. Periodic thinning cuts inside the canopy let light in and keep the plant full where it is supposed to be.
What we will not do
We will not shear a flowering shrub into a cube because it is quicker, and we will not cut a hedge back so hard it cannot recover in order to buy nine months without another visit.
