Height is not a preference, it is agronomy
St. Augustine wants 3.5 to 4 inches. Bahia wants 3 to 4. Zoysia wants 2 to 2.5 and Bermuda lower still. Cut St. Augustine at two inches because it 'looks tidier' and you have scalped it: the runners burn, weeds get the light they were waiting for, and the fix is a season long.
A dull blade is a disease vector
A sharp blade cuts; a dull one tears, and a torn leaf blade browns at the tip and lets fungus in. In summer that is the difference between a lawn and a brown-patch problem. Blade condition goes on your card because it is the cheapest thing on this page and the least likely to be checked.
The one-third rule, and what we do in the wet season
Never more than a third of the blade in one cut. In July that means we come when the grass needs it rather than when the calendar says, and if the yard is too wet to cut without rutting it, we say so instead of driving on it.
