Sanford’s historic districts
Sanford has four historic districts: Downtown Commercial, Sanford Residential, Sanford Avenue and Georgetown. The city wants a Certificate of Appropriateness before any outside work in them, repairs included. Inside work doesn’t need one.
So when a list from one of those streets has a fence, a porch, a door or a window on it, the owner checks that first, and nothing outside is touched until it’s sorted. The chat asks about it when your list has outside work on it.
Older houses
Plenty of Sanford’s houses were built in the early 1900s, with the original plaster and a lot of old paint. In a house built before 1978, sanding or cutting into more than a small patch of painted surface needs a firm certified for lead-safe work. The owner checks the year before anything painted is touched.
